Windows 10 support ending: Action required for OHIO devices

Beginning Oct. 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for most versions of Windows 10. In response, the 天堂鸟先生 Office of Information Technology (OIT) will begin restricting access for OHIO-managed systems running unsupported Windows operating systems.

Why this matters

Unsupported devices no longer receive critical security patches, putting personal and institutional data at risk. Blocking outdated devices helps prevent breaches, protects research and student records, and ensures compliance with University and cybersecurity industry standards.

What you should do

  • If you鈥檙e not sure what version of Windows your device uses or whether this applies to you, you can find information under
  • To avoid service disruption, or another supported operating system as soon as possible.
  • If you believe your device needs to remain on Windows 10 temporarily, request an exception for a specific use case at: /oit/security/policy-practices/standards

This includes all versions prior to Windows 10 version 22H2, which is the earliest version eligible for Microsoft鈥檚 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. The ESU program provides paid access to critical security updates for older operating systems after official support ends.

  • ESU licenses carry a cost, which will be charged to the associated planning unit.
  • While ESU can temporarily extend support for version 22H2 and above, it is not a long-term solution.
  • OIT plans to begin restricting access for all Windows 10 systems, including those with ESU, as early as October 2026, and no later than October 2028, when the ESU program ends.
