
Erica Neal joins OHIO Eastern, Zanesville campuses as assistant professor of instruction in education

Erica Neal has joined and as an assistant professor of instruction in education, bringing both classroom and teacher preparation expertise to the campuses.
In her new role, Neal supports the teacher education programs by teaching undergraduate courses, managing field placements and serving as the university clinical educator for the Zanesville campus.
鈥淢y passion for supporting teaching and education grew from a deep desire to make a lasting impact on students' lives,鈥 Neal said. 鈥淭hroughout my own academic experiences, I saw how powerful a positive student-teacher relationship can be in shaping not only academic success but also personal growth. I've always felt that the most important job a teacher can have is to inspire, guide and empower students to discover their potential.鈥
Neal began her career teaching elementary and middle school students, experiences that deepened her interest in pedagogy, curriculum design and the link between teacher preparation and student outcomes. She went on to pursue a PhD in Curriculum and Educator Development at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she supported preservice teachers and helped design teacher education courses.
鈥淭hese experiences gave me a deep understanding of both the challenges and rewards of teaching, which ultimately led me to the field of teacher education,鈥 Neal said.
Kim Ciroli, professor of instruction and OHIO Eastern Early Childhood and Elementary Education Program coordinator, praised Neal鈥檚 early contributions.
鈥淓rica has done an amazing job making connections with our local school districts to place teacher candidates in their field placements. She is already making a valuable contribution to our campus in and out of the classroom,鈥 Ciroli said.
At OHIO Zanesville, Teri Peasley, associate professor of instruction and Early Childhood Education Program coordinator, said Neal quickly became a valued colleague.
鈥淧rofessor Neal brings a wealth of experience that benefits our teacher candidates, from helping them understand the pedagogy of teaching to ensuring they have strong clinical field experiences in area schools. We are excited to welcome her and glad to work alongside her,鈥 Peasley said.
Neal said she looks forward to engaging with students who are closely connected to their communities.
鈥淏oth campuses serve unique populations, with students committed to making a difference in the region. Being able to support them as they pursue a career in education is very fulfilling,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am also looking forward to helping these future educators prepare to teach in a variety of settings, ensuring that they are not only academically prepared but also culturally responsive and ready to engage with the community.鈥
