How many classes will I complete in the program?
The M.C. or Master of Communication program consists of seven courses in total:
- Two required core courses (3 credits each): COMM 6000 – Introduction to Graduate Research and COMM 6960 – Master Capstone
- 6 elective courses (**4 credits each – depending on the certificate you have a 3 credit class that pairs with a 1 credit class)
30 total credit hours are required to complete the program
How does this program work?
You have three options to complete this master’s degree in addition to the two required classes. It’s important that you work with the program advisor to map out your tentative graduation timeline as not every certificate if offered every term. Here are the options:
- Completing two of the seven graduate certificates offered in our program
- Picking 1 graduate certificate and completing 12 credits of electives (4 classes within any of our certificates)
- Taking 24 credits (6 classes) within any of our certificates
Are there set times when I need to log in for classes?
No. A majority of classes are asynchronous, so there are no required live sessions. However, there are two certificates that have a virtual synchronous 1 day seminar, but being there for the live session is optional (although highly recommended!).
Once I pick my certificate(s), do I have any flexibility to change it?
Yes! You always have the choice to pick other certificates within our program or to change the amount of certificates you will be completing – as long as you complete the core classes and the 6 elective classes.
When I graduate do I receive a printed certificate in addition to my masters?
Yes! If you completed 1 or 2 certificates – you will get sent a physical printed certificate in addition to your diploma.
How long are the courses in this program?
Courses are structured in accelerated 7-week terms, allowing students to focus intensively on one class at a time. The Capstone Project is completed over a 15-week semester. We offer classes during the first and second 7-weeks of each semester.
Are there set times when I need to log in for classes?
No. Courses are asynchronous, so there are no required live sessions. However, there are weekly deadlines for assignments and activities.
What learning platform is used for the online classes?
All courses are delivered through Canvas, ÌìÌÃÄñÏÈÉú’s online learning management system.
Are instructors available for support outside of class?
Yes. While instructors do not have scheduled office hours, they are readily available by email or video conferencing to answer your questions. Simply email to schedule an appointment at a time that works for you.
Are there group projects in this program?
Yes, some courses include group assignments. Students are responsible for collaborating with their peers to determine meeting times that fit everyone’s schedules.
What citation style should I use for assignments?
Students are expected to use APA format for all written assignments. This is a graduate-level program and proper citation of sources is required.
How much time should I expect to devote to a 4-credit graduate-level class each week?
On average, students should plan to spend 8-10 hours per week on each 4-credit graduate-level course. This includes time for:
- Reading and reviewing course materials
- Participating in online discussions
- Completing assignments and projects
The time commitment may vary slightly based on your familiarity with the content and the specific course workload but maintaining a consistent schedule each week will help you stay on track and succeed in the accelerated 7-week format.
Will I have any support throughout the program?
Yes! You will be assigned two key support advisors:
- A graduate student specialist to help with registration and administrative questions.
- An Academic Advisor who will help you create a graduation plan during your first semester, so you have a clear path to degree completion.
What if I need to take a break for a semester due to personal or professional obligations?
You can take a break for a semester if needed. We understand that students may have competing demands, and our program is designed to be flexible. Simply communicate with your graduate student specialist in advance to discuss your plans and ensure a smooth transition when you’re ready to resume.
