Faculty who are new to online teaching now have a powerful new resource: the Interactive Guide to Online Course Design, created by the instructional designers in the Office of Instructional Design (OID).

This self-paced course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for creating engaging and effective online courses. It is designed to be flexible — instructors can work through the guide in one sitting or revisit sections as needed throughout the course design process.

There are four phases of this design process: Predesign, Design, Development and Course Delivery. Carefully work through each phase and complete the application activities recommended. Our focus throughout is on creating courses that are not only robust in their structure but also inclusive and engaging for every learner.

Pre Design Phase: involves understanding the context and purpose of the course, analyzing the target audience, and defining the scope and content.
Design Phase: The Design Phase involves strategically planning and structuring all the elements of your course to facilitate effective learning.
Development Phase: The course development phase marks the transition from planning to production.
Course Delivery Phase: The course delivery phase is when your online course goes live and students begin engaging with the content. This phase focuses on active facilitation, maintaining instructor presence, and supporting student success. This phase is important as it directly impacts student learning, satisfaction, and retention.
