Campus Safety and Emergency Procedures

Our faculty and staff across various functional areas are committed to working together to ensure access to support and safety resources and respond effectively to emergencies as they arise.

Always notify the Dean's Office (303 Shannon Hall) by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m., as they will notify the Dean鈥檚 Office or Facilities Management.
Emergency Procedures
Read more about emergency procedures for various incidents. If in doubt, please use the emergency telephone numbers or non-emergency campus telephone numbers, depending on the situation.
Accident/Injury
- Assess whether the incident is an emergency or non-emergency situation. If in doubt, assume that it is an emergency and call 911 with the exact location and type of emergency.
- As a follow-up to the 911 call or for non-emergency situations, contact the Dean's Office by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m. Record pertinent information about the incident and give to an OHIO Eastern staff member at the scene.
- Stay with and comfort any person needing medical assistance and be available for recording information for the incident report. Dean鈥檚 Office / Facilities Management will be responsible for the completion of the appropriate incident report.
- AEDs (automated external defibrillators) are located throughout campus.
- Call a family member or friend if requested by the injured person.
- If work-related injury, the employee must contact their supervisor the same day. The supervisor (with assistance from the employee) must complete an incident report form immediately after a work-related injury, illness, or incident and submit to the Dean鈥檚 Office.
Active Shooter, Intruder With a Weapon, or Person Showing Harmful Intent
- Call 911 and provide exact location and description the person/people
- Notify the Dean's Office by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m. They will contact emergency personnel to ensure they received the first call.
- An emergency messaging system will be activated, informing all subscribers of the situation and the appropriate actions to be taken through multiple communication forms (landline phone, cell phone, text message, and/or email) and other social media platforms.
Lockdown Procedures
- Take shelter in the nearest office, room, or closet. In a classroom or office, lock door (or if no inside lock - block door with desks, chairs, or other heavy object), turn off the lights, move away from the entry to the sides and corners of the room, get low to the floor, and prepare to engage the intruder if necessary.
- Remain in lockdown until the police or a campus administrator known to you gives the 鈥渁ll clear鈥 to the area. An 鈥淎ll Clear鈥 message will also be announced via the Emergency Messaging System (OHIO Alert!).
- If confronted by the intruder, engage physically only as a last resort. However, if necessary, defend yourself by countering the intruder and fighting back with any means available. Do not be a passive victim.
- If an armed intruder situation occurs and a clear opportunity is presented to flee, evacuate the facility as a top priority and as quickly as possible. Run in a zigzag pattern if the shooter is in sight. Stop when well clear of the site.
- If possible, direct students and faculty/staff away from area.
- If the intruder begins to use a weapon, use your judgment to get out or take cover and urge others to do so.
- Give a description of the suspect to police when they arrive, if possible.
Bomb Threat
- Do not use cell phones or two-way radios due to the potential of triggering the device and inform others likewise.
- Write down what the caller says and any notes about background noise or clues to the caller鈥檚 location.
- Keep the caller on the phone if possible and have someone else call 911 from a campus phone (not a cell phone), giving the phone number of the bomb threat caller.
- Call the Dean's Office by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m.
- Wait for further instruction from OHIO Eastern Administration or the Police Department.
Explosive Device
- Do not use cell phones or two-way radios, due to potential of triggering device, and inform others not to use same.
- Using a campus phone (not cell phone) call 911 to report a suspicious package. Do not touch or remove the package.
- Call the Dean's Office by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m.
- Evacuation procedures will be determined by emergency personnel.
Chemical/Toxic
- Assess the general threat/spill and/or condition of the victim. Call 911 if a victim is in need of immediate medical assistance.
- Call the Dean's Office by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m.
- Calmly direct students and faculty/staff away from the area.
- SDS Sheets are on file in the Facilities Management Department for reference and review.
- Emergency response personnel will assess evacuating building(s); Facilities management staff will check restrooms and study areas and assist physically disabled persons.
- Meet emergency personnel and relay pertinent information about the incident.
- Report pertinent information about the incident to an OHIO Eastern staff member at the scene who will call Central Ohio Poison Control at 1.800.222.1222, if necessary.
Fire
- Activate fire alarm at nearest pull station to immediately alert the fire department and evacuate building, checking restrooms and study areas.
- Ensure that any physically challenged person is given assistance in evacuating building.
- If you hear the alarm while in a closed room, feel the door before you open it. If hot, leave it closed. Open (break if necessary) a window with a desk or chair to exit.
- On upper-story floors, evacuate through the stairwell. Do not use the elevator and discourage others from using the elevator. Assist any physically challenged people to the stairwell behind the fire door. Inform emergency response personnel of any people in the stairwell.
Power Outage
- Call the Dean's Office by dialing 94294 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m. The utility provider will be notified to assess the situation and outage duration.
- The Facilities Management/Safety Office will assess situation/duration and inform the Dean of the outage status.
- Keep students in classrooms and buildings until situation is assessed. Emergency lights in halls and stairways will come on and provide lighting for at least an hour.
- If it is determined by the Dean to dismiss classes and/or to close campus, a representative from OHIO Eastern will advise you. In addition, notification will be sent via the OHIO Alert system.
Students or People In Crisis
- Call 911
- If possible, contact the Dean's Office by dialing 92494 on a campus phone or by calling 740.699.2494 or 740.593.2911 after 5 p.m.
- Be prepared to give the following information:
- The name of the person or group, if known.
- The exact location of the person or group.
- The size of the group (if applicable).
- Weapons involved (if applicable).
- The name of the person or group, if known.
- Avoid provoking or obstructing demonstrators.
- Avoid the area of the disturbance.
- In a Civil Disturbance:
- Stay inside.
- Stay away from doors and windows.
- Continue with normal business operations, if possible.
- If necessary, cease operations and evacuate.
- Secure your work area (lock doors, safes, files, vital records, and expensive equipment).
- Log off computers.
Tornadoes and Weather-Related Emergencies
Eastern has an emergency siren system for tornado warnings where a tornado has been sighted or conditions currently exist for a tornado to form or is approaching our quadrant of the county.
- When siren is heard, move away from windows to safe areas in interior rooms, hallways, stairwells, or bathrooms.
- As the siren cannot be heard in all areas of campus, the Dean鈥檚 Office or Facilities Management/Safety Office will send out staff to alert others and urge them into safe areas. Remain in a designated safe area until instructed to leave.
Media Relations, Communication, and Emergency Command
The Dean of OHIO Eastern or Manager of Marketing & Communication (or authorized designate) will serve as the only institutional spokesperson. Faculty and staff are asked not to describe events on social media.

In case of a life-threatening emergency, an individual should CALL 911, proceed to a safe place when applicable, and notify the Dean's Office.
