AUD Exams
Practical Exams (Year 1 and Year 3)
All AuD students will complete comprehensive practical and/or case based examinations at specific times throughout the program. Students must receive a passing score of >80% overall and on each subsection. If the overall score is <80%, the student must retake the entire exam. If a student passes overall but performs <80% on a subsection, the student must retake the subsection. Students may retake a practical exam or subsection one time. If after the second attempt they do not achieve >80%, the student will be placed on a clinical remediation plan. The plan will focus on areas of weakness identified on the practical exam. The remediation plan will take place the following semester in which the practical exam took place.
Year 1: Summer Semester
Year 3: Fall Semester
Practical examination documentation and results will be stored by the DCE. Credit for the practical exam will be given in HSLS 6921 and 8921.
Initial Exam
Pass >80% overall and on each subsection.
- If <80% overall the student must retake entire exam.
- If >80% overall but <80% on a subsection the student must retake the subsection.
- The procedure(s) for a subsection retake will be determined by the examiners and may include, but are not limited to, retaking entire subsection or an oral discussion.
- Retake exams will be completed during finals week.
Retake Exam
Pass >80%
- If the student does not pass the retake exam, (overall or on a subsection) with a score >80% the student will be placed on a clinical remediation plan the following semester. Credit will be given for HSLS 6921 and 8921.
- If the student does not pass with a score >80% and is already on a clinical remediation plan, the student will be placed on clinic probation with a clinical remediation plan. No credit will be given for HSLS 6921 or 8921. The practicum course must be repeated the following semester or when applicable in the program.
2nd Year Clinical Education Comprehensive Examinations
By midterm of spring semester of the second year* any student enrolled in the Clinical Doctorate of Audiology program must take:
- a comprehensive written exam
- a comprehensive practical exam (which consists of 6 sub-sections)
Both exams will include content from years one and two. Credit for the practical exam will be given in HSLS 7921 Audiology Practicum II.
The comprehensive written and practical assessment for the Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) program assesses students’ clinical skills and knowledge as required by program accreditation, licensure and certifying bodies. The examination will be taken in spring semester Year 2. At this point in their training students will have taken the core didactic courses and completed 4 semesters of clinical practica. The examinations will ensure that students are meeting the clinical skills and knowledge benchmarks prior to the onset of the final externship. Students who pass the written and practical examination (minimum 80% on each section) will be placed at a full-time externship summer semester Year 2. Students who do not pass on the first attempt will be required to retake any component in which they score below 80%. If unsuccessful after the second attempt, the student will be dismissed from the AuD program.
Written Exam Protocol
If the overall score on the written exam is <80%, the student must retake the entire written exam.
- The student may only retake the written exam one time.
- If the student does not earn a minimum of score of 80% on the retake of the written exam, the student will be dismissed from the AuD program.
Practical Exam Protocol
If the overall score on the practical exam is <80%, the student must retake the entire practical exam.
- The student may only retake the practical exam one time.
- If the student fails to earn a minimum of score of 80% on the retake of the practical exam, the student will be dismissed from the Au.D. program.
If the student scores <80% on one or more sub-section(s) of the practical exam, even if their overall score is above 80%, the student will be required to retake the sub-section(s) to demonstrate clinical competency in order to meet program standards. The procedure(s) for the retake will be determined by the examiners and may include, but are not limited to, retaking the sub-section or an oral discussion.
- If the student does not pass the retake procedure(s) for one or more sub-section(s) of the practical exam (achieve a minimum score of 80% on all sub-sections), the student will be placed on a clinical remediation plan the following semester.
- Note: If a student is on a clinical remediation plan summer semester of Year 2, the student will not be placed at a full-time externship summer semester. This will result in delay of graduation.
*Students enrolled in the AuD/PhD Joint program will be reviewed by their program/committee advisors/clinical supervisors to determine when the student should be required to take the comprehensive and practical exams.
Component | Initial | Retake (if applicable) |
---|---|---|
Written | Week 2 | Week 7 |
Practical | Week 5 | Week 10 |
Students will be given 5 weeks between the initial examination and the retake. This will allow ample time to review and practice prior to a retake. Discussions with the student will take place prior to the retake to review areas of weakness and to provide guidance to the student. This timeline will also allow for arrangements to be made to the summer clinical externship if the student is not successful.
