天堂鸟先生

Clinical Doctor of Audiology Program (AuD)

There are four elements to the four-year AuD program:

  1. A minimum of 105 semester-hours in the coursework.
  2. Clinical experiences in a variety of clinical settings including our university clinic and sites across the country.
  3. A research project that will begin the spring of Year 2.
  4. A full-time supervised externship that will be completed no earlier than the end of spring semester of Year 4.

The first two components are lock-stepped in a sequence of didactic and clinical training during the first three years and include formative and summative assessments of clinical skills.

Didactic and Clinical Courses

Professional Practicum Seminar/Clinical Training

Students in the AuD program will complete a clinical practicum series each semester during the first three years of their program. This series includes hands-on clinical experiences necessary for the completion of the clinical clock hours and the professional practicum seminar (a didactic component for the reinforcement of important clinical skills). The practical seminar is a key didactic component of the AuD program as it bridges didactic coursework and the clinical experience. The didactic component of the clinical practicum seminar is a weekly one-to two-hour meeting taught by clinical preceptors via direct lecture, hands-on clinical laboratory exercises, practical demonstrations, and/or student presentations. Topics are lock-stepped with courses in order to reinforce the practical skills associated with the clinical aspects of those topics.

Clinical Education

Clinical experiences advance in quantity, scope, and complexity within a variety of clinical settings over the first three years. On and off-campus clinical locations are phased into the student鈥檚 clinical training based upon individual skill and clinical needs. Offcampus sites are supervised by our own clinical faculty as well as off-campus clinical preceptors. These sites provide a wide range of clinical experiences for our students including settings in private practice, otolaryngology practices, hospitals, newborn hearing programs, schools, veterans鈥 administration (VA) clinics and regional clinics. During the summer of Year 2, students are placed at a one-semester full-time externship. The summer of Year 3 and fall and spring of Year 4 students are also placed at a full-time externship typically ending in May of Year 4. The combination of part-time placements years one-three and 4 semesters of full-time clinical externships constitute the equivalency of at least 12 months of full-time supervised experience. Detailed descriptions of the clinical experience are described below.

The clinical faculty is responsible not only for the educational practicum of students, but also for the well-being of the clients being served. All students and clinical faculty must follow the policies and procedures in the HSLS Graduate Handbook and in the HSLC Clinical Practices and Procedures Guide. Clinical experiences should be considered a privilege rather than a right.

Students who choose to seek ASHA certification must complete the requirements as outlined in the .

Clinical Experience

Year 1 of Clinical Experience (HSLS 6921)

During Year 1 all students will be directly supervised by an 天堂鸟先生 clinical preceptor so that clinical education and instruction occur in a structured and controlled environment. During the first semester focus is placed on obtaining necessary academic information and orienting students to HSLC operations. Fall semester, each student will be assigned to the 天堂鸟先生 HSLC one-half day per week. Assignments will include clinical observations of advanced AuD students. During spring semester, students will be given a minimum of one-half day assignment in the HSLC and/or the Ohio Health O鈥橞leness Hospital Newborn Nursery. Students will also perform audiometric evaluations on 鈥渕ock鈥 patients assigned to them by the clinical faculty. Summer semester students will again be placed in the HSLC and/or the O鈥橞leness Hospital Newborn Nursery for a minimum of one-half day. By summer semester students will also be required to complete a practical examination. The examination will be based on knowledge and skills learned throughout the entire first year in didactic course and the professional education series. Students will be required to pass the practical examination in order to advance in clinical practicum. Students who do not pass the practical examination are subject to clinical remediation. See the At-Risk Policy.

Year 2 of Clinical Experience (HSLS 7821 & HSLS 7910)

During fall semester Year 2, students will be assigned at minimum one-half day per week in the HSLC and/or the O鈥橞leness Hospital Newborn Nursery. During this semester, Year 2 students will be the primary clinicians working directly with HSLC patients under the supervision of an 天堂鸟先生 clinical preceptor. Students may also perform advanced audiological procedures on assigned 鈥渕ock鈥 patients or complete simulated activities. During this semester, Year 2 students will likely be paired with a Year 1 student who will be observing and acting as an assistant to the Year 2 student. Spring semester students who have made sufficient progress in clinical skills will be placed at a part-time off-campus site one full day per week if available. All students will be under the direct supervision of a licensed audiologist. The off-site placements are typically within two hours of the Athens campus. If an off-site placement is not available, the student will be placed in the HSLC for a minimum of one-half day. By the spring of Year 2, students will be required to take a comprehensive written and practical examination. Further details about this exam can be found below.

A thirteen-week, full-time off-campus externship is required during the summer semester of Year 2 (HSLS 7910). The definition of full-time is at least 35 to 40 hours per week for 13 weeks in direct patient contact, telehealth, consultation, record keeping, and administrative duties relevant to audiology service delivery. The student must have met the skills and competencies deemed necessary by the audiology staff and faculty and passed the comprehensive written and practical examination in order to complete the full-time summer externship. 天堂鸟先生 has an extensive list of externship sites with affiliation agreements in place that are available to students. The DCE will work directly with all Year 2 students and externship sites to ensure placements meet all requirements of the program and have established university affiliation agreements prior to finalizing a placement. If the student is not able to nor prepared to complete this placement during the summer semester Year 2, they are required to complete the summer externship during the summer following the third year of didactic work. This will delay the student鈥檚 graduation. Note the semester this is completed may be modified for students completing the AuD/PhD program or based on the student鈥檚 progress over the course of the program.

Year 3 of Clinical Experience (HSLS 8921 & HSLS 8910)

During Year 3 fall and spring semesters, students will again be placed at an established part-time off-campus site and/or in the HSLC for at least one full day per week. Spring semester students will return to the HSLC for a minimum of a one-half day assignment. During spring semester, Year 3 students may also be assigned a Year 1 student who will be the assistant, or the Year 3 student will be a mentor to the Year 1 student while they complete 鈥渕ock鈥 patient assignments, basic audiological procedures, and written documentation. Year 3 students may be assigned 鈥渕ock鈥 patient or simulation assignments at the discretion of the clinical preceptors.

During the summer of Year 3 students typically begin the first semester of a three-semester full-time externship rotation (HSLS 8910). Our students have been successful in obtaining competitive externship placements nationwide. The final externship is a full-time supervised externship the last three consecutive semesters of the program. This may be modified if completing the AuD/PhD or based on the student鈥檚 progress over the course of the program. The definition of full-time is 35 to 40 hours per week in direct patient contact, telehealth, consultation, record keeping, and administrative duties relevant to audiology service delivery.

Year 4 of Clinical Experience (HSLS 8910)

In Year 4 the student will continue the established externship rotation for the final two semesters. The final externship placement may not end prior to the end of spring semester of Year 4. If the placement begins the fall semester Year 4, then the student will take a typical course load and clinical training or a 13-week externship during the summer Year 3. Students who do not start the full-time supervised externship during summer of Year 3 will delay their graduation date by one semester and will not be able to walk at spring commencement.

The placement of the student in the final supervised externship site can only be made if the student 1) has met the skills and competencies deemed necessary by the audiology faculty and clinical faculty for the particular off-campus externship placement, and 2) submitted official score report for the PRAXIS to the HSLS Office.

Audiology Clinical Placements Requirements

  • Clinical experiences occur in a variety of settings including on-campus clinic, part-time off-campus regional sites, and full-time externships.
  • Students are expected to follow facility specific policies and procedures and comply with any additional requirements stipulated by the facility or as outlined in the Affiliation Agreement (AA) specific to that facility. The AA is a legal contract between the University and facility. Once the AA is approved and signed by all parties it will be provided to the student by the Directors of Clinical Education (DCE) for review. The AA is also available via Typhon. Students are required to sign an AA attestation indicating they have reviewed the AA and completed all requirements specific to that facility. Facility requirements may result in an additional expense to the student. Some off-campus facilities request student documentation (i.e., medical history, TB results, drug screening results, FBI/BCI checks) be sent directly from the school rather than the student. Because of this potential request, students will be asked to sign a release of information prior to being assigned to an off-campus facility. The DCE will provide this information to the facility at their request.
  • Reliable personal transportation is a function of obtaining clinical experience in rural Ohio.
  • During part-time and full-time externships attendance is required for the entire placement. Students may not delay the start date, request time off or shorten a clinical placement (part or fulltime) unless a written request has been provided and approved. Short-term requests must be approved by the site preceptor and DCE. Long-term requests must be approved by the site preceptor, DCE and HSLS Director. All requests must follow the university excused absence policy or the externship site鈥檚 attendance policy. If a student takes more time off than allowed, they will be expected to make up the time either at the end of the semester or potentially the following semester. This could result in an incomplete until the time has been made up as well as a delay in graduation. There may be some circumstances in which the office you are located closes due to vacation, training, or an unexpected event. In these circumstances, the student must notify the DCE for a plan to be discussed to either make up the time or prepare for other activities the student could do during the closure. If a student requests an extended leave, they will be required to take a leave of absence from the university. This will prolong the program and potentially delay graduation. This may also result in finding a new externship if the site is unable to accommodate the request.

Withdrawal for Medical Reasons

Part-Time Placements: HSLS 6921, 7921, and 8921

  • The HSLC: Students are assigned to the 天堂鸟先生 HSLC beginning fall semester Year 1. Students will complete hearing and balance assessment and treatment procedures on infants through the geriatric population under the supervision of a licensed audiologist.
  • Hearing and Speech screening opportunities: Screening opportunities, involving both hearing and speech students, occur randomly during the year in the HSLC and at off-campus sites. Supervisor occurs by both onsite and offsite preceptors. Assignments are made based on student availability.
  • Clinical simulations: These will be assigned through clinical practicum and various didactic courses.
  • Part-time offsite clinical placements: Part-time placements occur at regional sites with which the university has established affiliation agreements. Typically, students are assigned to part-time sites spring semester Year 2 after obtaining on-campus clinical experience in the HSLC and after showing sufficient progress within the program. If a student is not showing progress prior to spring semester Year 2, the student will remain in the HSLC until clinically ready. Progress is determined based on the ACCA and at the recommendation of the HSLS clinical preceptors. The goal is for each student to complete at least 1-2 offsite part-time placements. Typically, a part-time placement is 1-2 days/week and are assigned by the DCE or the Coordinator of HSL Clinic. Students may request a placement; however, they are typically assigned based on previous patient experiences to allow students a variety in their clinical placements. Part-time placements are available locally or within a 2-hour drive. Students will be notified of off-site assignments by email. The email will be sent to both the student and preceptor with specific details about practicum requirements as well as site, preceptor name and contact information. In some semesters, part-time placements are not always available to every student. In these situations, placements will be assigned at the discretion of the DCE with input from HSLS clinical preceptors and academic faculty.

Fulltime Externships: HSLS 7910/8910

  • Students will review potential externship placements with the DCE prior to contacting or establishing an externship. The DCE can assist the student in many ways and encourage questions related to selecting a potential externship. The DCE will work directly with all Year 2 and Year 3 students and externship sites to ensure placements meet all requirements of the program and have established university affiliation agreements prior to finalizing a placement.
  • 天堂鸟先生 has established relationships and current affiliation agreements with a number of externship sites. Additional sites are developed on an ongoing basis at the request of the student or site. Note that it can take several weeks to establish an AA. If a student wishes to pursue a site without an established AA, the student will submit a tracking form to the DCE who will then make the request to the CHSP Director of Clinical Education to establish an affiliation agreement Information about previous externship sites can be found on Typhon under Clinical Site or Supervisor Lists and on the Clinical Education Canvas Site. Often final externship opportunities are advertised through national audiology websites or the Audiology Clinical Education Network (ACEN).
  • Due to the high volume of students searching for fulltime experiences nationwide, it is important that students begin thinking about possible externships early in the graduate program. The externship placement request must be submitted to the DCE by November prior to the Summer and Final Externship. Further discussion concerning externships will occur during Years 2 and 3. Specific forms for the externship will be provided by the DCE.
  • Dates for externship placements are determined by the DCE and the site and may not be altered by the student without written permission from the DCE.
  • Fulltime externship sites may be located nationally; however, students are required to meet with the DCE to review potential site or state restrictions.
  • The DCE and/or the student will initiate communication with acceptable sites. A signed AA must be in place before the externship can begin.
  • Students are encouraged to have a backup choice in situations where an agreement cannot be reached, the agreement is terminated, or externship staff changes occur.
